Handyman in Hawaii Kai

A fan where the dining light used to hang. Grab bars by the tub. A smart lock, a window unit that finally drains outside. Hawaii Kai homes are mostly owned and mostly built between 1960 and 1989, and that shapes the list.

Small repairs and installs around Hawaii Kai

One visit can cover several items. These six are the ones Honolulu homes ask about most; the full list sits further down the homepage.

The east end

Which board areas around Hawaii Kai do we work?

We work all three Neighborhood Board areas out here, across the 96821 and 96825 ZIPs. Same housing pattern in each, mostly owner-occupied houses.

Hawaii Kai

Its own board at the east end, where an owner's list tends to mix upgrades in with the repairs.

Kuliouou-Kalani Iki

A combined board between Hawaii Kai and Waialae-Kahala, mostly detached houses from the same 1960s-to-1980s building wave.

Waialae-Kahala

The west end of East Honolulu, closest to Kaimuki and town, and the first stop when we come from that side.

Why owners call

Why do Hawaii Kai owners hire a handyman?

Owners here mostly hire a handyman to update houses they intend to keep. Only 16 percent of East Honolulu homes are rented, and most were built between 1960 and 1989, so the original fixtures are old enough to swap. Statewide, only about one home in eight runs central air, which is why the list so often starts with a ceiling fan where a light used to hang, or a window unit set properly in a bedroom. Grab bars beside the tub and toilet come up next, then smart locks on the front door, new faucets, and the cabinet hinges a kitchen from that era has worn loose. Most of it fits in a day.

  • Fan-rated box or brace before any fan goes up
  • Grab bars fixed into studs or rated anchors
  • Window units leveled so condensate drains outside
  • Smart locks matched to backset and door thickness
  • Old fans checked against the recall list
  • Several upgrades priced on one written quote

House by house

What changes from one east-end home to the next

Detached houses
Seven units in ten, so ceilings, exterior doors and side gates are all within reach on the same visit.
Units in big buildings
Roughly one unit in eight sits in a building of 20 or more, where house rules on contractor access and work hours come before the booking.
Houses from before 1978
Old enough for the federal lead rule, so painted surfaces stay within the small-job limits of 6 square feet per room inside and 20 outside.
Homes built since 2000
About one in eight. Their fixtures are newer, so the calls there tend to be mounting and assembly rather than repair.

Upgrades

Often, yes, but the box comes first. A box that carries a fan on its own must be listed for fan support and is capped at 70 lb, so a plain light box gets swapped for a fan-rated box or brace before the fan goes up. If no wiring reaches the spot, that part is an electrician's job. Details on our ceiling fan installation page.
The ADA benchmark puts a horizontal bar 33 to 36 inches above the finished floor, with exactly 1-1/2 inches between bar and wall.
Usually, since most smart locks replace an existing deadbolt. Backset and door thickness both have to match, and we line up the strike too, because a bolt that binds makes the motor strain and drains the battery.
Yes, sized to the room, set level or at the slight tilt its manual calls for so condensate drains outside, and sealed with the insulation pieces that came in the box.

Booking out east

Yes. All three Neighborhood Board areas on this end of the island are on our route, from the east end back toward Kaimuki.
Sometimes. Under HRS 514B-140(c), and subject to your declaration, a nonmaterial change inside a unit needs only board approval, which the board may not unreasonably withhold; material alterations also need 67 percent of owners. Check your declaration and house rules before the visit and we will work to them.
Usually, and it is the better way to book. Send the list with a photo of each spot, and the written quote groups them by room.
