Handyman Services in Honolulu, HI

A lanai slider that drags, a cracked louver, a towel bar hanging by one screw, a TV still leaning on the wall. We take the whole list in one visit, in houses and condos across Oahu. Tell us what is on yours.

How much does a handyman cost in Honolulu?

It depends on the list. Most handyman work in Honolulu is billed by the hour, and well-known tasks are often quoted as one flat price. Most visits carry a minimum charge, so one small fix costs close to what a short list does. Batch several jobs into one trip and the minimum and the drive are paid once.

Small repairs and installs around Honolulu

One visit can cover several items. These six are the ones Honolulu homes ask about most; the full list sits further down the homepage.

One visit

Why give one handyman the whole list?

Giving one handyman the whole list means the minimum charge and the drive across Oahu are paid once instead of once per job. The national pricing guides all repeat that advice, and it carries more weight on an island where getting from Kapolei to Hawaii Kai takes a real piece of the day. One visit can cover a jalousie crank that slips, a drywall patch where an old anchor tore out, a dripping faucet and a closet shelf, with the tools for all four in the truck. You get one written quote for the lot. If an item needs an electrician or a plumber, we say so before the visit and leave it off the bill.

  • One written quote covering every item on the list
  • Minimum charge and travel paid once, not per job
  • Condo house rules and work hours checked first
  • New wiring and moved pipes passed to the right trade
  • Hardware picked for the damp and the salt it will face
  • Single-wall houses fastened the way boards need

What makes a Honolulu repair different from the mainland?

A Honolulu repair differs from a mainland one mostly because of the building it happens in. Census figures put 48 percent of homes in the urban core in buildings of 20 or more units, so even a new light or a towel bar can depend on the building's work hours and house rules. Across Oahu, two in three homes went up between 1940 and 1989. Original doors, louvers and fixtures have spent decades in damp air, and hinge screws work loose in tired wood. Then there are parts. State harbor officials say more than 80 percent of the goods used here are imported, so we confirm sizes and model numbers before anything is ordered.

Single-wall houses

Can you hang shelves on a single-wall house?

Yes, you can hang shelves on a single-wall house, but the fastening changes because there is no stud cavity behind the boards. In single-wall building, one layer of vertical tongue-and-groove or board-and-batten planks is the wall itself. State preservation records trace the method to plantation housing and note it stayed in use into the 1970s. So a shelf, mirror or grab bar screws into the boards or the mid-height girt. Hollow-wall anchors have nothing to grip. Wiring cannot hide in the wall either, so new runs belong to an electrician.

High-rise units in Waikiki and Makiki, the older houses of Kaimuki, Aiea and Wahiawa, newer tracts around Kapolei and Ewa Gentry: the job list changes more than the drive does. Local notes for handyman work in Kailua and Mililani.

Booking a visit

Yes. Visits run from Hawaii Kai and Kailua out to Kapolei, Mililani and the North Shore. Put your neighborhood in the message. On a far trip, a longer list makes the visit better value, because the drive is the same whether we fix one thing or six.
Yes, one job is fine, though the visit minimum applies either way, so add anything else that has been waiting.
Clear a path to each item and keep any parts you bought on hand, in the box, with the instructions. For a TV, mirror or shelf, mark the height you want with painter's tape; deciding on the spot is where a lot of time goes. In a condo, check whether the manager wants notice or an elevator booking. If you rent, a quick note from the owner saves a phone call on the day.
An adult should be there at the start to walk through the list and at the end to check each item.
Yes, as long as the work fits your building's rules. Tell us the building when you book, along with any work-hour limits, and if the board wants a written request before something goes on a wall, get that sorted first and we schedule around it.
Yes, for off-base rentals and owned homes: patching anchor holes, rehanging a door that drags, recaulking a tub, tightening loose towel bars and blinds, the small items a walk-through tends to flag. Homes on base are different, because repairs there typically run through the housing operator rather than the resident.

The work itself

Repairs and small installs: door repair, drywall patches, jalousie window repair, faucets and toilets, ceiling fans and light fixtures on existing wiring, TV mounting, shelving, caulking, tile and grout, cabinets, fences, locks, grab bars, furniture assembly and window AC units. If your job is not on that list, describe it anyway. Plenty of small fixes, from a sticking screen door latch to a wobbly stair rail bracket, never get a page of their own.
When it adds a circuit, runs new wiring, or moves a drain or supply line. Swapping a fixture, fan or faucet on what is already there is handyman work. If anything on your list crosses that line, you hear about it before the visit, not halfway through it. A ceiling fan on an existing fan-rated box is ours; a fan where no box or wiring exists yet is not.
Often. Two in three homes on Oahu were built between 1940 and 1989, so the list tends to include original hinges, worn jalousie operators, swollen door edges and bathroom caulk that has given up. Parts for older hardware sometimes have to be matched from a photo or the old piece, which is why we ask for pictures early.
No; a loose cabinet hinge or a running toilet is a normal call, and listing everything else at the same time lets the visit minimum cover more.
